Where the Crawdads Sing

by Delia Owens

I just finished the book and I am still processing that ending. The reveal about Kya completely changed how I viewed her character throughout the story.

Throughout the book, we see Kya as this isolated, misunderstood woman who found solace in nature. She taught herself everything, survived abandonment, and built a life despite the odds stacked against her.

But that ending... it made me question everything. Was she justified? Was it self-defense in a broader sense? The fact that she kept those shells all those years shows such a complex psychological portrait.

I would love to hear different interpretations: - Did you see it coming? - How did it change your view of Kya? - Do you think Delia Owens wanted us to sympathize with her decision?

Looking forward to a thoughtful discussion!

I definitely did not see it coming! The whole time I was rooting for Kya, and even after the reveal, I still felt sympathy for her. Owens did an incredible job making us understand her perspective.

I think the ending is meant to be morally ambiguous. Kya spent her whole life being judged and mistreated by society. In her world, survival often meant taking extreme measures.

What got me was the shells. She kept them as... trophies? Mementos? That detail haunts me. It shows such a complex relationship with what happened.
